The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ dropped 0.6 per cent, or 42.8 points to 7311.8 at the closing bell, with tech and materials leading the decline.
Information technology stocks were the worst performing, with sector large-caps $Xero Ltd (XRO.AU)$ and $WiseTech Global Ltd (WTC.AU)$ falling 2.3 per cent and 1.4 per cent, respectively.
Iron ore miners traded lower in the back half of the session, tracking falls in futures pricing. $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ was down 1.2 per cent, $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ 1.3 per cent and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ 1.7 per cent.
Iron ore futures on the Singapore exchange continued to retreat, down 2.6 per cent on September contracts. After posting similar falls earlier this week, the contracts were approaching $US100 a tonne at close of market.
The big four banks all ended the day lower: $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ and $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ were both down 0.4 per cent, $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ lost 1 per cent and $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ 0.6 per cent.
$Janus Henderson Group PLC (JHG.AU)$ sank 4.7 per cent after reporting fund outflows in its latest quarterly report. $Pinnacle Minerals Ltd (PIM.AU)$ and $GQG Partners Inc (GQG.AU)$ also ended the session in the red, down 3.8 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively.
Shares in $Link Administration Holdings Ltd (LNK.AU)$ shed 4.01 per cent after the company flagged a bottom-line loss of $418 million in its upcoming report.
$Downer EDI Ltd (DOW.AU)$ fell 3.1 per cent after writing off almost $550 million ahead of its earnings next week.
