Tesla is lagging behind in robotaxi race

GM reaches robotaxi milestone that Tesla is nowhere near. Tesla is already lagging behind.
Tesla's FSD - has some limitations, mainly requiring the driver's constant supervision (level 2 autonomy). A driver is required to intervene when prompted.
Tesla EVs have driven billions of kilometres under L2 autonomy. But it is zero for L4 autonomy. Extensive testing without a driver is required for a robotaxi.
You can't just update the software and expect the EV to jump from L2 to L4.
The robotaxi (self- driving taxi) business is one that Ark Invest thinks could be worth USD10 t by 2030, though the sector is currently in its infancy.
Other companies, however, already have robotaxis on the road.
Google has a self-driving division called Waymo which offers limited service in San Francisco. And General Motors has its own self-driving division called Cruise, which, like its competitor, also provides limited service in San Francisco.
GM's Cruise said that, in a big milestone for the sector, it had signed a labour union agreement with two local San Francisco chapters representing electrical workers and janitors. This, according to Reuters, is the first union agreement for the nascent robotaxi industry. The dozens of workers GM will employ as a result of the agreement will be responsible for constructing and staffing Cruise's charging stations.
Who will be first to get L5 robotaxis without any restriction? Who will be the market leader in L5 robotaxis? Waymo, Cruise or Baidu's Apollo Go is most likely rather than Tesla.

  • bullrider_21 OP : All lidar and other systems collect information. All apps like Facebook, X, TikTok collect information. Whether it's for national security or not, it's anybody's guess. If you want to ban TikTok, you might as well ban Facebook and X too.

EVs use lidar and radar to ensure the safety of passengers. They provide redundancy in case the cameras fail. Safety is the priority.

Tesla uses cameras only as lidar and radar are expensive. For it, cost and profit are its priority and not safety.

  • bullrider_21 OP : National security is the reason Tesla is not allowed to use FSD in China.
