Apple begins hunt for generative AI talent globally
$Apple (AAPL.US)$Amid the surge of artificial intelligence, AI has become the buzzword on everyone's lips in the tech world. However, it seems Apple might be an exception. During last week's Apple Q2 earnings call for the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, the company maintained a sense of "restraint" when it came to AI. Yet, this outward restraint can't conceal Apple's demand for AI talent. It's possible that Apple has long been expanding its pool of talent, quietly embarking on the journey of developing large AI models that run directly on mobile devices. On August 6th, the UK's Financial Times reported that based on Apple's job postings between April and July of this year, they are engaged in a "large-scale, long-term research project with the potential to shape Apple and its future products." The analysis by the Financial Times suggests that Apple's recruitment requirements reveal the company's R&D direction over the years—to compress existing language models for more efficient operation on mobile devices rather than in the cloud. It is noted that Apple currently maintains a small AI research hub in Paris, having recently poached several researchers from$Meta Platforms (META.US)$, with further plans to expand the team.
