Establishment and Achievements
Jenson Huang (President and CEO), who left LSI Logic, established NVIDIA with Chris Malachowsky (English version) (Chris Malachowsky: Vice President) and others in 1993.
In 1997, engineers belonging to SGI participated one after another, announced the low-cost yet extremely powerful graphics chip “RIVA 128” [footnote 1], and joined the ranks of major industry players. Furthermore, the successor product “RIVA TNT” was released in 1998, and it quickly became the leading technical manufacturer in the PC graphics chip industry.
In 1999, the “GeForce 256,” which was the world's first inexpensive graphics chip equipped with a hardware geometry engine (hardware T&L), was launched, surpassing the performance of 3DFX's Voodoo3+glide, making its position immovable. Note that the name “Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)” proposed by NVIDIA came to be used from this product [5]. Even before GeForce, there were expensive geometry engine-equipped chips used in commercial workstations, etc., and VGA cards equipped with geometry engines specialized in OpenGL, such as the 3DLabs' Permedia series, etc., but GPU-equipped boards (or graphics workstations) sold for commercial use were expensive to purchase by individuals, and Permedia was relatively inexpensive It did not have satisfactory performance. NVIDIA provided chips to many assembly manufacturers with whom it had deals before, sold them to many consumers, and made it possible to realize 3DCG at a level that could only be made in Hollywood with personal PCs, which shocked the market and at the same time was well received.
As a result of the above, as of 2019, NVIDIA has taken an overwhelming position in the field of artificial intelligence, especially autonomous driving.
I believe NVIDIA will be even stronger.
