AI, US-China tensions, the starting gun of a high-tech competition in 2025 - ToBeck

[Column] AI, US-China tensions, the starting gun for the 25-year high-tech competition sounds-TovekJanuary 6, 2025 13:24 JST
The technology industry in Asia will once again be under harsh scrutiny this year.
The most successful global app originating from China is heading towards an unprecedented measure of being banned in the United States.
The upcoming trade war will further intensify the US-China confrontation. While facing the harsh reality to some extent of the enthusiasm surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a theme, there is no sign of the boom subsiding at the moment.
Leading the global movement to hold social media companies accountable is the Asia-Pacific region.
TikTok
A drama involving the video-sharing app 'TikTok' operated by ByteDance in China unfolded last year. A law that effectively prohibits TikTok in the USA has been enacted, and unless ByteDance sells its US business, TikTok will no longer be available in the USA.
The last chance for TikTok to be rescued through the US judicial system will be on the 10th of this month, when the Federal Supreme Court will conduct a hearing. The law will come into effect on the 19th, the day before the start of Trump's second term. Trump has requested a temporary suspension of the law from the Supreme Court, but it is unknown whether it is possible.
If the popular TikTok among young people worldwide becomes illegal in the USA, it will send a clear message that Chinese products and services are not welcome in the US market overall for Chinese technology companies.
What impact will there be on PDD Holdings' discount e-commerce site 'Temu' and apps developed by Chinese AI startups if TikTok becomes illegal in the USA?
Although it is unlikely that the USA will focus primarily on comprehensive regulations, if TikTok is banned, the propaganda section of the Chinese Communist Party led by General Secretary Xi Jinping (President) will surely attack fiercely with maximum irony.
Trade wars and technological hegemony
China, which wants to dominate technological hegemony, is already focused on the USAOvertaking in progress. In the midst of an all-out effort to overtake. The U.S. government has focused on semiconductor-related export restrictions to block China's progress. Mr. Trump has threatened with significant tariffs, making the situation even more complicated. This exchange between the U.S. and China has already affected AI semiconductor leaders such as NVIDIA and is likely to involve even more companies.
As the mutual dependence of supply chains becomes clear, it will be clearly recognized how challenging full-scale decoupling between the U.S. and China can be.
Attention still needs to be paid to large U.S. companies that heavily rely on China, such as Apple manufacturing the iPhone in China and Tesla, which has a huge electric vehicle (EV) factory in Shanghai.
In India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and other countries, there are opportunities to benefit from new initiatives by technology companies aiming for supply chain diversification. However, these regions could also become targets of the broad high tariffs that Mr. Trump is hinting at. As the retaliatory trade war between the U.S. and China continues, consumers are beginning to feel the pain.
While Asia competes to play a leading role in the global AI boom, there are countless points to watch out for, but 2025 is particularly intriguing with well-funded Chinese startups.
Moonshot AI, Minimax, Zhifu AI, Bai Chuan Intelligence, 01.AI, and Stepfan are all believed to be aiming for entry into the lucrative U.S. market, but TikTok's plight is casting a shadow over the ambitions of emerging players.
Chinese companies are facing a double burden of tough domestic scrutiny and U.S.-led advanced semiconductor export restrictions. The question emerges whether these obstacles will crush Chinese companies or drive them towards innovation. The answer should gradually become clear. SoftBank Group's Masayoshi Son, who has shown a fearless attitude towards risks, is making a big bet on AI.
As investors try to determine whether the funds invested in AI will actually generate profits at this point, Son is fully committed. Will Son ultimately achieve great success, or will it end in failure?
TSMC
TSMC, the world's largest semiconductor foundry, is currently facing various pressures.
While the US heavily relies on TSMC to revitalize its domestic semiconductor industry, Trump accuses Taiwan of stealing the US semiconductor industry. The military exercises repeatedly conducted by China around Taiwan are also a cause for concern.
US companies like Apple and NVIDIA rely on TSMC for their core semiconductor products, but last year, Pat Gelsinger, Intel's CEO, effectively dismissed, openly casting doubts on Taiwan's stability.
There is another drama unfolding at TSMC. Dealing with Chinese companies is already declining. In such an environment, will TSMC's growth and dominance continue? I trust the company and its management, but it is likely that several major challenges await them in 2025.
Tech Regulation
Australia plans to enforce a law banning the use of social media by those under 16 in the latter half of 2025. As neighboring countries watch the developments closely, they are also introducing their own regulations to counter the influence of leading US technology companies.
Such movements in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia and Vietnam, are being criticized by digital rights advocates for emulating China's internet censorship policy.
It's not just social media companies that Asian countries are concerned about. Global initiatives to restrict Chinese e-commerce giants like PDD are also taking the lead. This may prompt other countries to join such actions.
