Apple to Allow Developers In-App NFC Transactions with Secure Element on iOS 18.1
iOS 18.1 introduces NFC contactless transactions via the Secure Element within apps.
Developers can offer payments, car keys, transit, IDs, and more using NFC and SE APIs.
Transactions can be initiated directly in-app or by setting a default contactless app in iOS Settings.
Secure Element ensures sensitive information is stored securely on the device.
Apple requires a commercial agreement, NFC/SE entitlement, and fees for developer access.
APIs initially available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Japan, Australia, Brazil, and New Zealand.
Apple maintains strong security and privacy measures, including biometric authentication and Secure Enclave.
Government IDs will be supported in future updates.
