ARM: Aiming to Capture 50% Market Share in Windows

At the 2024 Computex exhibition, Qualcomm and ARM both emphasized the emergence of the Win-ARM ecosystem.
The CEO of ARM stated, "I believe that ARM's market share in Windows may exceed 50% within the next five years." He further predicted that there will be 100 billion AI devices powered by ARM processors by the end of 2025.
Competition between x86 and ARM
In the era of AI PCs, processors are gradually shifting from x86 to ARM architecture. This shift is primarily driven by the demand for "high-performance, low-power" chips in AI computing, which ARM architecture offers compared to x86.
Currently, $Qualcomm(QCOM.US)$ , $NVIDIA(NVDA.US)$ , $Advanced Micro Devices(AMD.US)$ , and MediaTek have collaborated with $Microsoft(MSFT.US)$ and launched processor products based on ARM architecture.
Morgan Stanley previously predicted that by 2027, the sales of WoA (Windows on ARM) PC chips will reach 50 million units, generating $10 billion in PC CPU revenue.
The CEO of ARM's statement has once again clarified the accelerating growth of ARM — "to exceed 50% market share within five years" (currently around 10%). If ARM's push succeeds, the market will undergo a significant reshuffle, presenting a significant opportunity for processor manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek with deep expertise in ARM architecture.
ARM's Ecosystem Challenges
Windows on ARM (WoA) was introduced in 2011 but has not achieved success due to a lack of supporting ecosystem. Ideally, WoA would leverage the low-power and long-lasting battery life of ARM processors while maintaining the software usage habits of x86 PC users. However, due to the absence of an integrated hardware-software ecosystem like Apple's, ARM CPUs remain a niche player in Microsoft's Windows ecosystem, accounting for only 12.8% market share, while x86 still holds nearly 70%.

Qualcomm's Chip Performance Enhancement
Qualcomm introduced the X Elite/Plus platform and revealed significant performance improvements. Qualcomm acquired Apple's chip team, Nuvia, and will utilize its new self-developed Oryon core in the next-generation Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon 8 Gen4 chips. This core is expected to significantly enhance the processor's performance in terms of power consumption and efficiency.

NUVIA's CPU architecture is world-class, with the potential to compete with and even surpass Apple. During the announcement, Qualcomm provided more specific figures, stating that the NPU efficiency of the Snapdragon X Elite is 2.6 times higher than Apple's M3 and 5.4 times higher than Intel's Core Ultra 7 155H. Additionally, compared to Apple's M3, Qualcomm's NPU bandwidth is increased by 35%, CPU performance by 28%, and battery life by 19%.
