$AST SpaceMobile (ASTS.US)$'s surging options volatility fueled the heavy volume seen on zero-days-to-expiration (0DTE) call options that give the holders the right to buy the stock at $35.
ASTS shares climbed as much as 17% to $36.87 early Friday morning, building on the surge a day earlier after the company that's building the first space-based cellular broadband network said it plans to launch the first of its five commercial satellites in the first half of September. That boosted the appeal of the company that hasn't been profitable since late 2021. The rally didn't last.

The stock reversed course just half an hour after the market opened, slumping as much as 11% to $27.71 before paring those declines to 3.5% by 12:51 p.m. in New York. That wild price swing rippled through the options market. The 0DTE calls with the $35 strike price saw an implied volatility of more than 260%.

The price of those $35 call options climbed to a high of $3.20 earlier in the day when the stock traded above that strike price. Later, the options plunged as much as 94% to a low of 5 cents before trimming the declines to 7.5 cents. That volatility may have presented trading opportunities for many who are quick enough to react to the price movement and boosted the volume.
More than 19,000 of those $35 calls changed hands around noon time, almost double the open interest. That makes them the most active AST SpaceMobile options across 12 series of contracts stretching through Jan. 16, 2026, according to data tracked by moomoo.

While the satellite launch prompted UBS to increase the stock price target to $30, from $13, that's still below the $35 strike price for the calls.
After the recent runup in the share price, technical indicators tracked by moomoo are flashing early warning signals, with 10 of the 15 gauges, including the relative strength index (shown below) implying that the stock could be overbought, and the trend may turn bearish.
