AU Evening Wrap | ASX 200 says 'Farewell' to 2024 with last session in red
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ fell 0.92% to 8,159.10 in Tuesday's shortened final session of 2024, echoing Wall Street's decline. Investors showed caution due to concerns about the US tech rally's sustainability, Federal Reserve policy, and China's economy.
Market sectors showed a mixed performance today. The majority of sectors, specifically 9 out of 11, closed in negative territory, mirroring the overall decline in the S&P/ASX 200 Index. Energy stood out as the day's top performer, bucking the trend with a 0.47% gain. This sector has also shown strength over the past week, accumulating a 1.83% increase over the last five trading days.

$Beacon Minerals Ltd (BCN.AU)$ dropped 4.35% to A$0.022, while $Astral Resources NL (AAR.AU)$ fell 3.57% to A$0.135. Beacon agreed to sell its 11.99% stake in $Maximus Resources Ltd (MXR.AU)$ to Astral, exchanging 51.3 million MXR shares for 24.5 million Astral shares.
Major banks saw declines amid a reminder for consumers to update mobile wallet debit cards by 2025. $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ fell 0.8% to A$28.54, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ dipped 0.71% to A$32.32, $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ decreased 0.8% to A$37.10, and $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ slid 1.18% to A$153.25.
