AU Evening Wrap: ASX Closes 0.9% Higher; Origin Sinks 6%

The ASX's interest rate-sensitive sectors rallied on Thursday, after the US Federal Reserve once again left monetary policy on hold, prompting traders to raise their bets that rates had peaked in the US.
The benchmark $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed up 61.4 points, or 0.9 per cent, at 6899.7 as nine out of the 11 industry groups climbed.
Tech stocks rallied 3.8 per cent, following a fourth straight session of gains on the Nasdaq overnight. Mortgage rate-exposed sectors also climbed – real estate stocks jumped 2.4 per cent and financials 1.4 per cent.
Among the big four banks, $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ gained 2 per cent to $25.37, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ 2.1 per cent to $21.17, $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ 1.5 per cent to $28.57 and $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ 1.6 per cent to $98.43.
Utilities were the worst performers, weighed down by $Origin Energy Ltd (ORG.AU)$ after major shareholder AustralianSuper rejected a sweetened takeover offer from Brookfield and EIG. The shares dropped 6.6 per cent to $8.47.
$Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ also dropped, ending the day down 2.9 per cent at $7.51 after a federal court stopped the energy company from commencing work on its $5.8 billion Barossa gas pipeline project in the Timor Sea.
