A sell-off in technology and real estate stocks dragged the Australian sharemarket into the red on Tuesday as the market continues to reposition for a longer period of higher interest rates.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ traded near a 10-week low after the US 10-year Treasury bond yields hit their highest level since October 2007 at 4.56 per cent overnight on Monday.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 38.3 points, 0.5 per cent, to 7038.2 at the closing bell, weighed down by losses in nine out of the 11 industry sectors. The All Ordinaries dropped 40.3 points to 7238.3.
The interest rate sensitive tech sector was the worst performing. It was lower by a 2.6 per cent loss in large cap stock $Xero Ltd (XRO.AU)$. $Nextdc Ltd (NXT.AU)$ shed 2.1 per cent, $WiseTech Global Ltd (WTC.AU)$ decreased 1.7 per cent and Altium fell 1.8 per cent.
In company news, $Qantas Airways Ltd (QAN.AU)$ shed 1.3 per cent after CLSA became the first major broker to slap a "sell" rating on the stock in a year.
Imaging company $Pro Medicus Ltd (PME.AU)$ surged 12.4 per cent and topped the main index after winning a $140 million contract with US-based Baylor Scott & White Health.
Shares in mining company $Coronado Global Resources Inc (CRN.AU)$ advanced 2.2 per cent after Czech-based company Sev.en Global Investments acquired a 51 per cent stake from the Energy & Minerals Group.
$Liontown Resources Ltd (LTR.AU)$ dropped 1.7 per cent after Gina Rinehart lifted her strategic stake, complicating battery chemical giant Albemarle's $6.6 billion takeover tilt at the lithium prize.
