AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Close 0.6% Lower
Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.6% lower at 7670.3, with strength in utilities offset by broad-based weakness across the benchmark index. S&P/ASX 200 was 2.3% lower for the week.
Energy stocks rose 2.0% while the materials sector was a key drag, closing the day 1.9% lower. $Emerald Resources NL (EMR.AU)$ was the day's worst-performing stock, dropping 10%, while miners $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$, $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ lost 1.5%, 2.3% and 1.9% respectively.
$Tabcorp Holdings Ltd (TAH.AU)$ fell 5.2% after the company announced Thursday its CEO was stepping down.
The major banks had a patchy day ahead of the RBA meeting next week with $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ rising 0.9%, $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ slipping 0.6%, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ falling 1.1% and $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ flat.
