AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Close 1.4% Lower; All Sectors in Red
The information-technology sector led the loss, falling 3.0%. That mirrored the weakness overnight in large U.S. tech stocks, including Apple.
Property trusts, which fell 2.5%, and the materials sector, which shed 1.8%, were also key drags on the benchmark index.
$Gold Road Resources Ltd (GOR.AU)$ was one of the session's poorest performers, falling 8.9% after it announced its 4Q output, which some analysts deemed lackluster.
Still, $Endeavour Group Ltd (EDV.AU)$ rose 2.5% as it named a new incoming chairman and was the day's best stock.
Insurer $Suncorp Group Ltd (SUN.AU)$ added 0.5% after telling the market it expects to be within its 1H natural-hazard allowance. Fellow insurers $QBE Insurance Group Ltd (QBE.AU)$ and $Insurance Australia Group Ltd (IAG.AU)$ rose 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. The major banks fell between 0.9% and 1.3%.
