$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed flat at 6854.3 after strong inflation data stoked concerns that the country's central bank may hike interest rates further. Most sectors finished in the red, with only materials and telecom services stocks closing higher.
Grocery company $Woolworths Group Ltd (WOW.AU)$ fell 2.0% as it flagged in a 1Q FY 2024 update that some shoppers were focusing on value against the current economic backdrop. $Bega Cheese Ltd (BGA.AU)$ lost 1.7%, while $Elders Ltd (ELD.AU)$ gave up 2.4%.
The major banks were down between 0.4% and 1.3%, while fund manager Magellan lost 2.9% following the announcement of the departure of its CEO.
