AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Close Flat Amid Mining Weakness
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed flat at 7496.3 as weakness in mining stocks offset strength elsewhere. The benchmark index traded in a narrow 27.5-point range through the session, following the mixed lead from U.S. equities at the end of last week.
Iron-ore miners $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$, $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ and $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ lost between 0.5% and 1.1%, while lithium stocks also contributed to the materials sector's 0.8% decline.
Major banks $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$, $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ and $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ added between 0.2% and 0.4%, while $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ finished flat.
The ASX 200 is now 1.25% lower so far in 2024, having finished the first trading day of the year just 1.1 points off its record close of 7628.9, set in August 2021.
