AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Edge 0.1% Lower on Commodity Weakness
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.1% lower at 7659.0, snapping a run of three straight gains amid weakness in commodity stocks. The benchmark index spent all but a few minutes of Tuesday's session in the red, weighed by shares of miners and energy explorers.
Iron-ore miners $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$, $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ shed between 0.7% and 2.2%, while metals recycler $Sims Ltd (SGM.AU)$ dumped 9.7% on soft 1H earnings and an uncertain outlook.
Coal miners $Whitehaven Coal Ltd (WHC.AU)$ and $New Hope Corp Ltd (NHC.AU)$ lost 1.6% and 4.3%, respectively.
Casino operator $The Star Entertainment Group Ltd (SGR.AU)$ tumbled 20% after the announcement of a new regulatory probe into its operations.
Financial stocks helped pare the overall losses. Banks $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ and $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ added 1.0% and 2.6%, respectively.
