AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Fall 0.9% as RBA Reiterates Hawkish Stance
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.9% lower at 7061.6, notching its largest one-day loss since Oct. 20 after the country's central bank held interest rates but reiterated its tightening bias.
Nine of the benchmark index's 11 sectors finished in the red, giving back some of their recent gains as the Reserve Bank of Australia warned that it could raise rates further in 2024.
Commodity stocks were the worst performers. The energy sector lost 2.1% amid lower oil prices, while weakness among shares of gold, iron-ore and lithium miners pulled the materials sector down by 1.8%.
Major banks were mixed, but the heavyweight financial sector lost 0.2% amid losses among regional lenders and wealth managers.
