AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Gain 0.7% for Best Close Since September

$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ rose 0.7% to 7124.7, closing at its highest level since Sept. 20 on the eve of the Reserve Bank of Australia's final interest-rate decision of 2023.
Gold and iron-ore stocks pulled the heavyweight materials sector to a 1.5% gain, with $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ and $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ putting on 1.6% and 1.7%, respectively.
The consumer discretionaries sector rose 1.25% as analysts continued to digest retailers' Black Friday trading updates. The staples sector rose 0.9%, helped by supermarket supplier $Metcash Ltd (MTS.AU)$'s 1.1% gain on its 1H results.
Tech, which is the smallest of the ASX 200's 11 sectors by market capitalization, rose 1.9% and was the best performer.
$Origin Energy Ltd (ORG.AU)$'s 3.9% fall amid shareholders' rejection of a Brookfield-led takeover pulled the utilities sector 2.5% lower.
