$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ closed 0.8% higher at 7006.7 amid strength in commodity stocks. Shares of gold, lithium and iron-ore miners all gained as the benchmark index rallied swiftly from an opening dip.
$BHP Group Ltd(BHP.AU$, $Rio Tinto Ltd(RIO.AU$ and $Fortescue Ltd(FMG.AU$ added between 1.4% and 2.7% as the materials sector, which comprises about 25% of the ASX 200 by market capitalization, rose 1.5%.
Energy was the strongest of the ASX 200's 11 sectors, jumping 2.5% amid higher oil prices.
Banks $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd(ANZ.AU$, $CommBank(CBA.AU$ and $Westpac Banking Corp(WBC.AU$ put on between 0.2% and 1.0% after Commonwealth reported a 1% rise in 1Q unaudited cash profit. $National Australia Bank Ltd(NAB.AU$ traded ex-dividend and fell 3.2%.
