AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Lose 0.6% in Fifth Straight Decline
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.6% lower at 7346.5, slipping to a fifth straight decline amid weakness in commodity and real-estate stocks.
Iron-ore giant $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ led the heavyweight materials sector 1.1% lower after signaling that it could write down the value of its nickel assets. BHP, Australia's largest listed company by market capitalization, fell 1.8%.
Lithium miner $Liontown Resources Ltd (LTR.AU)$ shed 11% after $Albemarle (ALB.US)$ sold its stake in its former takeover target.
The real-estate sector lost 2.3% amid continued uncertainty over the timing of interest-rate cuts.
Nine of 11 sectors closed in the red as the benchmark index stretched its losses so far this week to 2.0%, putting it on course for its worst week since October. The outliers were financials and consumer discretionaries, which edged 0.1% and 0.3% higher, respectively.
