AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.3% as Iron-Ore Miners Advance

Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.3% higher at 7848.5, edging closer to a record amid strength in iron-ore stocks. $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$, $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ put on between 0.7% and 1.9% amid continued strength in iron-ore prices, while lithium stocks also gained.

Eight of eleven sectors finished higher as the benchmark index finished less than 49 points short of its March 28 record close.

Energy finished 0.4% lower as $Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS.AU)$, $Boss Energy Ltd (BOE.AU)$ and $Beach Energy Ltd (BPT.AU)$ lost between 0.9% and 2.2% amid weaker oil prices.

Bank stocks wobbled as the central bank in neighboring New Zealand said it was likely to maintain a restrictive interest-rate policy. $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ and $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$ were flat, but $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$ and $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ lost 0.1% and 0.8%, respectively.
