AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.3%, Clinch Second Straight Weekly Gain
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.3% higher at 7194.9, rounding out back-to-back weekly gains for the first time since July. The benchmark index slipped lower at Friday's open but steadily recovered and closed at its session high.
Growing expectations that interest rates have peaked helped the ASX 200 to its highest close since Sept. 19.
Commodity stocks were again among the stronger performers, with $Santos Ltd (STO.AU)$ jumping 6.1% on merger talks with fellow energy explorer $Woodside Energy Group Ltd (WDS.AU)$.
Lithium stocks rallied, while iron-ore miners $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$, $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ and $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ put on between 0.7% and 1.1%.
Major banks barely moved as the financial sector inched 0.1% higher. The ASX 200 rose 1.7% for the week.
