AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.3%, Helped by Health Care Stocks
$S&P/ASX 200(.XJO.AU$ continued its positive streak for the week, rising 0.3% to 7257.8. Health care stocks helped boost the index, but this was offset by weakness in energy companies.
$Neuren Pharmaceuticals Ltd(NEU.AU$ was the day's best performer, rising 6.5%, while $Polynovo Ltd(PNV.AU$ added 5.5% and $Ramsay Health Care Ltd(RHC.AU$ gained 1.9%.
The major banks rose between 0.7% and 0.9%.
$Chalice Mining Ltd(CHN.AU$ had the day's worst performance, ending 5.4% lower. $Whitehaven Coal Ltd(WHC.AU$ fell 2.6% and $New Hope Corp Ltd(NHC.AU$ dropped 2.2%.
Australia's economy faces a tough year in 2024, with the government forecasting today that there would be slowing economic growth, rising unemployment and continuing budget deficits.
