AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.3% on Strength in Miners
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.3% higher at 7078.2, edging to a second straight narrow gain on strength in mining stocks. The materials sector put on 1.4% amid strength in gold, lithium and iron-ore miners. $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$, $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ added between 0.7% and 1.9%.
The energy sector rose 0.4% thanks to gains by oil producers.
Consumer-related stocks dragged as minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia's most recent board meeting hinted at the potential for one more interest-rate rise.
The heavyweight financial sector rose 0.2%, with losses by wealth managers paring modest gains from major lenders.
