Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.4% higher at 7703.2 as stronger iron-ore prices helped lift shares of the country's largest miners. $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$, $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ and $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ added between 2.5% and 3.6% after iron-ore prices rose following solid Chinese economic data at the start of the week.
The ASX 200's materials sector, second only to financials in terms of market capitalization, gained 2.1% for its strongest day since Dec. 14.
The energy sector also rose, adding 2.0%.
Bank stocks pared the overall gains after the Reserve Bank of Australia held interest rates and reiterated that inflation remains uncomfortably high. $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$, $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$, $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ and $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ lost between 0.2% and 0.6%.
