AU Evening Wrap: Australia Shares Rise 0.45% on Large-Cap Gains
Australia's $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.45% higher at 7824.2, moving to within 73 points of its record close amid strength in shares of large-cap banks and miners.
Banks $National Australia Bank Ltd (NAB.AU)$, $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$, $CommBank (CBA.AU)$ and $Westpac Banking Corp (WBC.AU)$ put on between 0.5% and 1.15%, continuing their ascent of the past 10 months.
Materials was the best performing of the ASX 200's 11 sectors despite weakness in shares of building-product manufacturers. Iron-ore miners $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$, $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ and $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$ added between 1.6% and 3.0%, while gold and lithium stocks also gained.
Retail stocks also rose despite a survey showing consumer sentiment declining this month amid pessimism over the prospect of interest-rate cuts.
