$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.7% lower at 7058.4 amid weakness in financial and mining stocks. The benchmark index drifted lower through the day, giving back some of its strong gains of the past two sessions.
The financial sector lost 0.8% amid weakness in regional lenders and a 3.3% fall for major bank $ANZ Group Holdings Ltd (ANZ.AU)$, which traded ex-dividend. $AMP Ltd (AMP.AU)$ shed almost 16% as it announced the launch of a new digital bank and flagged margin pressures ahead.
The materials sector lost 0.8% on weakness in gold, lithium and iron-ore miners.
With one session remaining, the ASX 200 is 1.2% higher this week amid hopes that central banks globally may be nearly done with interest-rate rises.
