AU Evening Wrap: Miners Drag ASX 0.8% Lower
$S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ closed 0.8% lower at 6987.6, weighed down by losses in almost every sector. The benchmark index hit its lowest close in two weeks, with real-estate, consumer and materials stocks leading the falls.
Gold stocks, typically seen as a hedge against macro uncertainty, finished higher, but the materials sector dropped 1.1% on weakness in lithium and iron-ore miners. $Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AU)$, $BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AU)$ and $Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$ lost between 1.3% and 2.1%.
Supermarket and alcohol stocks fell, while nearly every consumer discretionary stock finished in the red.
Shares in every real-estate investment trust lost ground.
Tech was the only one of 11 sectors to finish higher, helped by sector heavyweight $WiseTech Global Ltd (WTC.AU)$'s 1.6% rise.
