AU Morning Wrap: ASX Falls; Premier Investment Jumps
Wall Street Summary
U.S. stocks recorded their best month in more than a year, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing Thursday to a 2023 high, while bonds posted their biggest monthly gain in years.
Commerce Department data on Thursday showed that Americans slowed their spending and that inflation continued to ease in October, boosting expectations that the Fed is done raising rates.
All three major U.S. stock indexes ended November at least 8 per cent higher, snapping three-month losing streaks. The tech-heavy $Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC.US)$ led the way, ending the month up 10.7 per cent despite a 0.2 per cent decline on Thursday. The $S&P 500 Index (.SPX.US)$ gained 0.4 per cent Thursday to finish November 8.9 per cent higher.
The blue-chip $Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI.US)$, which on Thursday rose 1.5%, or 520 points, had its best month since October 2022, climbing 8.8% to its highest close since January 2022.
AU Market Watch
Australian shares slipped at the open, shrugging off a late rally on US indices.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ opened 34 points or 0.5 per cent lower at 7068.1. The All Ordinaries is 0.4 per cent down.
Early in trading, all 11 sectors are tilting lower, with tech stocks the worst hit, down 1.3 per cent. Energy stock are flat following fall in the price of oil overnight.
Stocks to Watch
$Premier Investments Ltd (PMV.AU)$: Peter Alexander owner Premier Investments is among the best performing, up 3.6 per cent to $25.31, after the retailer said it expected earnings before tax in its first half to come in around $200 million, higher than expected by most analysts.
$SSR Mining Inc (SSR.AU)$: SSR Mining is set to sell a Peru-based gold and silver project to Highlander Silver. Shares are 0.5 per cent higher at $17.76.
$Coles Group Ltd (COL.AU)$: Coles is 0.3 per cent lower at $15.29 after Australia’s consumer watchdog waved through plans by the supermarket owner to purchase milk facilities from Saputo.
