Wall Street Summary
Over on Wall Street, the rally that pushed the $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ within just a few points for resetting its record in the last week of 2023, finished off the year, out of momentum. Wall Street was closed on Monday, New Year's Day.
AU Market Watch
Australian shares edged up at the open for the first trading session of 2024, with little direction to take from closed overseas markets.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ rose 0.1 per cent, or 5.1 points at the start of trade on Tuesday, within just 50 points of the record high set in August 2021.
Gold stocks were among the worst performers on the ASX 200, led by $De Grey Mining Ltd (DEG.AU)$ down 2 per cent and $Gold Road Resources Ltd (GOR.AU)$ declining 1 per cent.
In company news, $Eagers Automotive Ltd (APE.AU)$ shares rallied 1 per cent after it updated investors about a cyber incident in December that affected the company's ability to complete transactions for some vehicles was because of unauthorised access to parts of its IT system by a third party.
The impact of the incident is not expected to be material for the 2023 financial year, the retailer said in an ASX announcement.
