AU Morning Wrap: ASX Pushes Higher, Led by Miners
Wall Street Summary
The stock market is charging through earnings season, with the S&P 500 hitting a fourth consecutive record on Wednesday.
Strong showings from most of the "Magnificent Seven" stocks helped drive major indexes into the green.
Nvidia's and Meta Platforms' advances helped lift the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite 0.4 per cent. The benchmark S&P 500 gained less than 0.1 per cent, while the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.3 per cent, or 99 points.
AU Market Watch
Australian shares are pushing higher at the open, led by iron ore miners BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue.
The $S&P/ASX 200 (.XJO.AU)$ opened 28 points, or 0.4 per cent higher, at 7548. The All Ordinaries is up by a similar margin.
BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue are all up more than 1 per cent, buoying the index. Iron ore has rallied above $US135 after the governor of China's central bank tipped a cut in the reserve requirement ratio for banks within two weeks. It's the latest sign that the nation is seeking to shore up both its battered equities markets and the economic outlook.
Stocks to Watch
$Mineral Resources Ltd (MIN.AU)$: Mineral Resources has jumped 5.6 per cent to $58.57 and is the best performing on the benchmark. The lithium miner kept its volume and cost guidance unchanged for FY24. In its second quarter report, the miner said spodumene production at Mt Marion had increased 30 per cent, quarter on quarter and shipments rose 34 per cent. It also noted that its Wodgina, Mt Marion and Bald Hill are profitable at current spodumene prices.
$ResMed Inc (RMD.AU)$: ResMed is 5.6 per cent higher at $28.24. The medical technology developer has maintained its quarterly dividend at US48¢.
$Domino's Pizza Enterprises Ltd (DMP.AU)$: Domino's Pizza has sunk 27.8 per cent after withdrawing its guidance as the company reports slumping sales from its Asia stores.
$Fortescue Ltd (FMG.AU)$: Fortescue has maintained its FY24 production guidance after shipping near-record levels of iron ore in its first half of the financial year.
$Sayona Mining Ltd (SYA.AU)$: Sayona Mining is 4.5 per cent lower at 4.2c. The lithium miner has cut staff at its North American site, as the company attempts to weather a lithium price rout sweeping the sector.
