It's hard to believe that almost two years ago, just 16% of Aussies held direct international shares (according to the ASX Investor Study), but now Aussies are investing and trading in US stocks like never before. See Instagram post for more or read on
Australians are trading and investing in US shares like never before and are backing chips
With the 2024 financial year just closed off June 30 2024, we had a game changing year as investors chased momentum and returns, backed by strong earnings multiples (earnings and profit growth).
On our platform the five most bought and held investments were all listed in the US. And the common theme was AI and chips. Excluding Gamestop.
So in the financial year from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, the most bought investments (on moomoo in Australia) were
1 Nvidia ( $NVIDIA(NVDA.US)$ )
2 Tesla ( $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ )
3 GameStop ( $GameStop(GME.US)$ )
4 Super Micro Computer ( $Super Micro Computer(SMCI.US)$ )
5 Semiconductor Bull ETF 3X Shares ETF ( $Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3x Shares ETF(SOXL.US)$ )
So why is this so? We all know Nvidia, SMCI and SOXL have been popular investments for many reasons (see my prior posts) but also remember that hundreds of billions of dollars is being invested in AI and chips by mega tech hyperscale companies such as Microsoft $Microsoft(MSFT.US)$, Meta $Meta Platforms(META.US)$ and Google $Alphabet-C(GOOG.US)$. Plus the US and EU announced they're investing US$81 billion into AI and chips too.
AI and chips, I think will continue to dominate and generate some of the best investment returns into the new financial year. You probably know a lot of other analysts agree, along with sell-side investment analyst and investment banks. I also believe commodities benefiting from AI and chip demand such as copper and uranium will also continue to generate some of the best returns in the US and Australia as well in 2025.
So if you aren't invested in AI and chip thematic, maybe ask yourself why.
This is not considered advise and is general in nature. Consider your own financials circumstances and investment time horizon and objectives, before making any investment decisions.
