Brazil's data protection agency: Meta must not use the country's data to train its Al models.
$Meta Platforms(META.US)$ Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, cannot use data originating in the country to train its AI models, Brazil's national data protection authority said today.
Under Meta's updated privacy policy, the company can feed users' public posts into its AI system. But today, Meta's approach will not be allowed in Brazil.

Brazil's National Data Protection Agency stated in the official state gazette that Meta's approach will put Brazilian users' data at an imminent risk of serious, irreparable or irreparable damage to the basic rights of affected data subjects. damage.

Brazil is one of Meta's largest markets. Facebook alone has about 102 million active users in the country, according to Brazil's data protection agency. According to Brazil's 2022 census, the country's total population is 203 million.

A Meta spokesperson said in a statement that the company was disappointed and insisted that its actions complied with Brazilian privacy laws and regulations. "This decision is a step backwards for innovation and competition in AI development and further delays the process of AI providing better services to the Brazilian people," the spokesperson added.

In addition to Brazil, Meta's privacy policy update in Europe has also encountered resistance. Recently, the company suspended plans to use users' public posts for training AI systems. In the U.S., there are currently no national laws protecting online privacy, so such training is already underway.

In May of this year, Meta said on its Brazilian blog that it would use information that people publicly share on Meta products and services to implement some generative AI functions, which may include public posts, photos, and their captions.

According to Brazil's National Data Protection Agency, Meta must demonstrate compliance within five business days of receiving notification of its decision. Otherwise, Meta faces a daily fine of 50,000 reals (about 8,820 U.S. dollars).
