I don't know how to assess custodian account risk comprehensively, so I won't be able to answer this. I suppose if a person makes 1 (big amount)trade and hold long term eg 5yrs 10yrs 20yrs then it certainly makes sense as there's only 1 transaction cost

If you're fairly sure you will be holding longterm (as in, months and years), it would be better to hold it in CDP in your own name; no point adding an extra layer of risk. If you intend to buy/sell frequently, custodian makes more sense, for the lower fees.
