Contemporary Amperex Technology is seeking to acquire solar module and solar cell companies, and is currently in talks to acquire a new energy company along with a solar module manufacturer. A new energy fund was established in 2018 and ranked 8th in global solar module shipments in the first half of this year. Multiple insiders said that before contacting a new energy fund, Contemporary Amperex Technology also tried to acquire a 51% stake in another solar module manufacturer, Runyang Co., Ltd., with 4 billion yuan. Runyang is the fifth largest solar cell manufacturer in the world. In the end, the leading solar power company, Tongwei Co., Ltd., made a bid of 5 billion yuan to acquire a 51% stake in Runyang, creating a record for the largest merger and acquisition amount in the history of China's solar power industry. Tongwei announced this transaction in mid-August.
