Chipmaker AMD is laying off four percent of its employees for competing with NVIDIA [Tweakers & Reuters] CPU & GPU against AiMC from MU and others from imec Belgium?
$Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ Chipmaker AMD is laying off four percent of its employees, which amounts to about a thousand jobs. The layoffs are part of a strategy to make more AI chips in the hope of better competing with Nvidia.
AMD confirms the layoffs to . A spokesperson said the company is taking "a number of targeted steps" to align available resources with "the greatest growth opportunities." According to Reuters, AMD is specifically referring to its AI chips.
Sales from the data center segment, which also includes AI chips, increased by "122 percent" (!!!) last quarter compared to a year earlier and amounted to 3.5 billion dollars. Analysts also expect this department to grow by 98 percent throughout 2024. Meanwhile, revenue from the PC segment grew 29 percent to $1.9 billion in the third quarter of this year and sales from the gaming division fell 69 percent to $462 million.
In the fourth quarter of 2024, AMD wants to start mass production of a completely new AI chip. This concerns the MI325X, which the company already talked about in June. This GPU will have 288GB of memory, fifty percent more than the existing MI300X GPU. Furthermore, the bandwidth will be increased by thirty percent to 6TB/s.
Conclusion; competition can start which makes sense. AND do you know that AMD and
$Micron Technology (MU.US)$ work closely together. Already heart from the new Analog-in-Memory Computing (AiMC) from Mu. it is a technique that embeds computing tasks directly within memory cells, such as SRAM or DRAM, allowing the chip to perform calculations inside the memory rather than transferring data back and forth to a separate processing unit (e.g., CPU or GPU).👍

Money Thrill OP : But price-earnings little to high ... but sufficient growth can significantly reduce that. 50% or more to P/E of 60 ??
Shroomie Money Thrill OP : “We are entering fiscal 2025 with the best competitive positioning in Micron's history. We forecast record revenue in fiscal Q1 and a substantial revenue record with significantly improved profitability in fiscal 2025.”
Money Thrill OP Shroomie : Yes, i follow Mu here in Belgium, sometimes news from imec where Mu has contract of 3 years. Do you know that the chips for 2039 excist already here but not in production, only laboratory. They don't say for which company? i guess Mu ????
Money Thrill OP : indeed, The Micron 7000 SSD delivers impressive performance for complex mixed workloads on AMD EPYC processor.
