Delta continues to expand operations in Mexico
New service to Tulum
From 12/11, Delta Air Lines will commence a weekly flight from Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to Tulum International Airport (TQO).
According to ch-aviation data, it will be operated by a Boeing 737-800, which Delta currently has 77 aircraft. The 737-800 aircraft of the same airline consists of a total of 160 seats, 16 first class seats, 36 comfort seats, and 108 main cabin seats.
Delta Air Lines already operates flights to Tulum from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), which is the largest hub airport, and is also scheduled to commence service from Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (MSP) on 2024/12/21.
Tulum International Airport, which opened in December 2023, was designed to function as a second gateway for tourists to the Riviera Maya and popular vacation spots in the southern Yucatan Peninsula. Since then, airlines from all over Mexico, Central America, and North America, such as Copa Airlines, Air Canada Rouge, and Viva Aerobus, have been working hard to establish new routes to this facility.
On 2024/12/12, Tulum International Airport will welcome the first transatlantic flight by Discover Airlines, which takes an Airbus A330 directly from Frankfurt (FRA). The airport's operations are expected to become even busier over the next few months
Further expansion in Mexico
Moving away from Tulum, Delta Air Lines announced a new route connecting Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Mazatlan International Airport (MZT).
Delta Air Lines will introduce the Airbus A319 as a new service to Mazatlán. The airline's A319 aircraft currently have 57 aircraft, with an average age of 22.5 years, and each aircraft can carry up to 132 passengers in 3 classes with 12 first class passengers, 18 comfort passengers, and 102 people in the main cabin.
It competes with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines on the Los Angeles-Mazatlán route, but there is no direct competition between Detroit and Tulum.
Aeromexico's 24th destination in the U.S.
Simultaneously with the expansion of Mexico routes by Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico revealed plans to launch daily flights from Mexico City International Airport (MEX), which is a hub airport, to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Aeromexico, the flag carrier of Mexico, will introduce a Boeing 737 MAX 8 to this route as part of a joint cooperation agreement concluded with Delta Air Lines.
As a result, the total number of flights operated between Mexico City and New York by both airlines will be 5. The same route will commence service on 2024/10/27, making Newark the 24th destination in the United States for Aeromexico.
