I see some friends asking what circuit breaker is, I'll briefly explain based on the lesson from the FF incident.![]()
1. Individual stock circuit breaker.
In 2010, the USA stock market began to implement individual stock circuit breaker mechanism. It is understood that based on the current weight stock's decline, there may be multiple stocks circuit breakers after the USA stock market opens at night.
According to the latest regulations from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the USA, the circuit breaker mechanism not only targets the large cap circuit breaker mechanism, but also has a mechanism for 'limiting price fluctuations up and down'. IfIf the trading price of a certain individual stock fluctuates by more than 10% within 5 minutes, trading will be suspended. If the trading price of the stock has not returned to the specified "price range" within 15 seconds, trading will be suspended for 5 minutes.
2. Index Circuit Breaker
The benchmark index for the USA's index circuit breaker mechanism is the S&P 500.The single-day decline thresholds are 7%, 13%, 20%. When the index falls 7%, 13% from the previous day's closing level, trading across all US securities markets will be suspended for 15 minutes. When the index falls 20% from the previous day's closing level, trading for that day will be halted.
The circuit breaker mechanism was first proposed by the New York Stock Exchange in the USA in 1987 to prevent a stock market crash similar to 'Black Monday'. At that time, the circuit breaker mechanism only applied to large cap indices.
In March 2020, there were four circuit breakers in the US stock market.
On March 9, 2020, the S&P 500 index fell by 7% after opening, triggering the first level circuit breaker.
On March 12, 2020, the S&P 500 index fell by more than 7% shortly after opening, triggering the first level circuit breaker again.
On March 16, 2020, the S&P 500 index opened with a drop of 220.60 points, a decrease of 8.14%, triggering the third circuit breaker of that month.
On March 18, 2020, the S&P 500 index fell 177.29 points intraday, a decrease of 7.01%, triggering the fourth circuit breaker of that month.
