Many years ago, I read a story about a small novel author who mentioned that when he was on a business trip to peking, he wanted to buy some local specialties for the elderly at home. When choosing Fu Ling biscuits at a confectioners' pastry counter in a certain department store, the female sales clerk quietly told him that the Fu Ling biscuits had expired and advised him to buy from another store. The author was sincere, questioning why the expired goods were not removed. The female clerk continued to whisper, 'I don't have the right to remove them, but I have the right to secretly inform you.' I always remember this slightly inspirational story, as it constantly reminds me that even though we may not have the ability to change the overall situation under a larger environment of control, we can still maintain kindness and continue to be human in small gestures.
