Google CEO: Tesla leads in AVs amid Tesla FSD moving closer to Unsupervised with V13 series
1) According to Electric Google CEO Sundar Pichai described Tesla as a leader in the autonomous vehicle sector, positioning it alongside Waymo, during his appearance at the New York Times DealBook Summit.
“I think obviously Tesla is a leader in the space. It looks to me like Tesla and Waymo are the top two,” Pichai said. Immediately before, the chief executive of Google had noted that Tesla “is making amazing progress too.”
Over the past week, Tesla began rolling out the latest version of its Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to customers. On the last day of October, Tesla’s Vice President of AI Software, Ashok Elluswamy stated that the FSD team is “aiming to get to feature complete for unsupervised FSD with the v13 series.”
2) Saywer from X.com reported and provided a short video clip of the interview with Google CEO here:
3) Google CEO is not the first to praise Tesla FSD. In May 2024, Musk acknowledged Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang‘s recent comments about Tesla being a leader in autonomous vehicles. Huang stated that every car would eventually need autonomous capabilities.

4) Xpeng's new model, internally codenamed F57, will not be using any LiDAR and move to a pure vision solution similar to Tesla's FSD, a source familiar with the matter told CnEVPost.
5) My Take
The above has shown that Tesla is setting the direction for autonomous driving technology that is to be camera-based and ditch the LiDAR sensor.
Tesla remains to be L2 autonomous driving vehicles is to bypass regulation restriction to large scale testing. Its "end-to-end AI" uses neural networks to process vision data and directly control the vehicle, instead of using traditional algorithms. Demo has shown that it is capable of L3.

ZnWC OP : Someone is saying Tesla Cybercab (or Robotaxi) is inferior to Google's Waymo because the former is tele-operated. He is using the same argument that Tesla humanoid robot, Optimus is less superior because it is tele-operated.
Tesla Cybercab is using FSD technology to drive the vehicle autonomously. Tele-operated is a safety requirement to test drive on public roads. The Robotaxi will drive autonomously 99% of the time.
In the same argument, tele-operated in Tesla Optimus is a safety precaution. The robot is operating autonomously most of the time. People are often mistaken by the video showing a staff "teaching" Tesla Optimus as "tele-controlling" the robot.
