Stepping into 2025, we are greeted with one of Malaysian fav Kopitiam’s IPO: $KOPI (0338.MY)$ ![]()
So what is so special about this kopitiam compare to its peers such as Oldtown or Nanyang Kopitiam from a layman perspective?
Branding & Right Positioning - Oriental Kopi is not aiming customers that are super particular about food but those that are finding balance between a clean and comfortable environment + a decent Malaysia food. They are also positioning themselves to overseas tourist as the “Go To Spot” when they visit Malaysia.
A quick check on a popular food review app in China “ 大众点评” as shown above, Oriental Kopi is ranked 4.7/5.0 rating and no.2 ranking in KL Asia Food with over 900+ reviews. This generates higher interest among 大众点评 users when they visit Malaysia and searching for recommendations of local food. Oriental Kopi is definitely part of their “必吃榜单/Must Eat” in Malaysia![]()
Talking About Numbers - Oriental Kopi definitely have some interesting financial performance that atrracted the investment community ![]()
1. High Profitability - With only 20 cafes, they are able to generate RM43M in FYE2024, this translates to an average RM2.15M per branch
2. High Margin - Net PAT margin of 15% for FYE2024, usual F&B business will only yield between 5-8% in general. Its much higher!
3. Strong YoY PAT Growth - With a CAGR growth of 55 times over 4 years. Its amazing how fast Oriental Kopi been riding this wave of 冰室. (Honestly at the start of their business operation, i tot the hype will just last a few months, but im proven wrong!)
All in all, overall Oriental Kopi is an interesting IPO to watch ![]()
However, F&B is a cyclical and trend oriented business. We have seen many F&B companies glory days and close down after the trend is over. Can Oriental Kopi sustain its fundamentals with Malaysian Delights? That is the thing we need to monitor! ![]()
