In response to the recent rise in tension between Iran and Israel, hard-line newspapers in Tehran are calling for a drastic shift in Iran's nuclear policy and advocating major “transformation.”
On October 1, Iran launched a large-scale ballistic missile attack against Israel. This is in response to Israel's attack against Iran's main military proxy organization Hezbollah in Lebanon, and it is necessary to protect Iran's national interests. In response, Israel has pledged strong retaliation.
As Iran prepares for Israel's retaliation, the Javan newspaper representing Iran's ultra-hardliners said on ThursdayIran insists it is time to review its nuclear policyI did it. Until now, Iran has insisted that it focuses only on peaceful purposes.
In a memo written by Ali Gannadi, Mr. Javan emphasized that “Iran's nuclear policy over the past 50 years (including the Pahlavi dynasty) has focused on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, but today Tehran has the ability, circumstances, and opportunities to immediately change this plan.”
According to the memo, it is stated that normal attacks against Israel do not provide sufficient deterrence, and “given the determination of Israeli leaders to establish a new order using destructive military technology, there is a risk that this approach will further intensify the conflict. Some may suggest creative solutions to deal with the situation, but one immediate option is a shift in Iran's nuclear policy.”
The article points out that if confrontation and mutual attacks intensify and Israel faces an existential crisis, the Israeli government will pose a nuclear threat to Iran. “Can't Israel issue an overt or covert nuclear ultimatum?”
This hardline newspaper further argued that Iran needed deterrence against Israel's overwhelming technological superiority, and suggested something that could be interpreted as mutual nuclear deterrence.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is scheduled to give a sermon during Friday prayers in Tehran on 10/4, and was seriously damaged by Hezbollah, which is Iran's main proxy force.Speculation that a new nuclear doctrine may be announcedThere is also one. Currently,Iran has accumulated 60% enriched uranium reserves, and it can be refined to 90%, which is the level required for a nuclear bomb, in just 2 weeks. Iran's shift in nuclear doctrine could indicate an open movement to enrich uranium to 90%, and if Israel targets Iran's vital interests, it poses a threat to nuclear weapons development.
Iran's approximately 12 nuclear facilities are potential targets for Israeli attacks aimed at Iran. This is to destroy or stop functioning Tehran's nuclear program, particularly enrichment facilities in places like Natans.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called for the destruction of Iran's nuclear program on Tuesday in response to Iran's missile attack.
“Israel now has a huge opportunity for the first time in 50 years to change the face of the Middle East,” Bennett said on his X account.
“We must act 'now' to destroy Iran's nuclear program and central energy facilities and fatally bring this terrorist regime to a standstill.”
