$Apple (AAPL.US)$ is reportedly developing a next-generation Siri assistant that will feature on-device artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, according to rumors swirling in the tech community. Reliable leaker Revegnus suggests that Apple is working on revamping Siri to become the ultimate virtual assistant by integrating a large language model (LLM). The first product showcasing these updates is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2024.

The speculations indicate that Apple aims to develop Siri into its most powerful killer AI app, making it a standard feature on the iPhone 16 and future models.
The Next Big Smartphone Battleground
Google's Pixel
$Alphabet-A (GOOGL.US)$ in October launched Pixel 8 smartphones that integrate its artificial intelligence (AI) technology more deeply into the company's consumer gadgets. Google beefed up the Pixel line up with its latest mobile processor, Tensor G3. The new Google custom chip has more AI and machine learning capabilities, enabling users to crunch more data on the device itself and in the cloud. The AI features can help with photography, summarizing web pages and blocking out spam calls, executives said at Made by Google event in New York on Wednesday.

Google was clearly focused on driving the mobile AI message in today's event and having AI on the device/client will be a big topic for the industry going forward," said IDC analyst Ryan Reith.
Reece Hayden, an analyst at ABI Research, said Google is looking to establish itself as an early market leader amid the "generative AI-related hysteria," which kicked into high gear late last year with the introduction of ChatGPT. Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content, such as text and images, in response to user prompts.
Samsung's Gauss
Just a few days after OpenAI's developer event, Samsung unveiled its own generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, at the Samsung AI Forum 2023. Samsung Gauss, developed by the tech giant's research unit Samsung Research, consists of three tools: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image.
Samsung Gauss Language can understand human language and increase productivity by helping with tasks such as writing and editing emails, summarizing documents, and translating languages. Samsung Gauss Code is aimed at developers, focusing on development code, while Samsung Gauss Image is an image generation and editing feature.
The tech company said Samsung Gauss is now being used internally with its staff only but will be available to public users "in the near future." The company did not elaborate on a timeline. Samsung aims to release Galaxy S24 based on its Generative AI model as early as 2024, according to local media reports.

Humane's Ai Pin
Humane, a startup founded by former Apple design and engineering team members Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has launched Ai Pin, their long-awaited hardware product that utilizes artificial intelligence. The device can clip onto clothing and will cost $699 with a monthly subscription of $24, which includes unlimited data and phone calls. The company partnered with T-Mobile for phone service and $Microsoft (MSFT.US)$ and OpenAI for AI technology. Orders for the device can be placed starting from Nov 16.

The Humane Ai Pin is designed to replace smartphones eventually and comes with its phone number, which means it does not need to be paired with a phone. The device is screenless and can be operated through voice, touchpad, gesture, or holding up objects. It features a laser projector that emits text onto the user's hand. Co-founders Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, both former Apple employees, have recruited other ex-Apple staff, including the CTO, Patrick Gates. In a statement, Chaudhri and Bongiorno said the Ai Pin was their vision of integrating AI into daily life without losing humanity.
Apple's New Siri
One of the most intense and widespread endeavors at Apple right now is its effort to respond to the AI frenzy sweeping the technology industry. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook says that Apple has been working on generative AI technology for years. But it can be seen in no uncertain terms that Apple executives were caught off guard by the industry's sudden AI fever and have been scrambling since late last year to make up for lost time.
Rumors that Apple is planning to reboot Siri with on-device AI may still be in their early stages, but they also make a lot of sense – and with other tech giants recently going public with their new LLM, a launch for Apple's new voice assistant at WWDC 2024 doesn't sound far-fetched.
