Low Application Penetration and Significant Age-Related Differences in ChatGPT Usage
Survey data from March and April 2024 across six countries indicate that even the youngest age group (18 to 24 years old) does not frequently utilize OpenAI's flagship product, ChatGPT. Nine percent of respondents claimed to use it daily, while another 18% use it at least once a week. Monthly users accounted for 12% of all respondents, and 17% have used it once or twice. This suggests that, among the survey participants, 44% have never used ChatGPT.
The distinction between casual, frequent, and non-use is more pronounced among older individuals. Among respondents over 55 years old, 84% have never used OpenAI's chatbot, which generates responses by calculating the statistical probability of each subsequent word in a sentence from training materials. Between 13% to 15% of respondents in other age groups have used it at least once or twice. The weekly consultation rate for ChatGPT declines from 19% among 25-34-year-olds to 9% among 45-54-year-olds.
