$Lumen Technologies (LUMN.US)$ Lumen Technologies has started significant efforts to prepare for the future of quantum computing and AI-driven services. Lumen is expanding its Quantum Fiber network to reach millions of homes, which would support the high-speed, low-latency infrastructure needed for services like Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS). The company aims to reach 12 million locations with fiber-based services over the next several years, indicating a long-term commitment to upgrading its network capabilities.

Additionally, Lumen is heavily investing in custom network solutions and private connectivity fabrics, which are designed to handle AI-intensive workloads and offer businesses secure and scalable network infrastructure. This division will provide critical infrastructure that could also be used to support quantum networks in the future.

With partnerships like the one with Meta, Lumen is positioning itself to handle the demands of AI and quantum computing, offering network solutions tailored to these advanced technologies . Therefore, as quantum computing becomes more mainstream, Lumen’s expanded and upgraded network will play a key role in enabling homes and businesses to access quantum services.

  • DipHunter : You know all these services would require large amount of power but not bandwidth right?

  • Patience3to6 OP : Quantum computer requiring significant bandwidth but not necessarily extreme amounts of power, can be seen in the quantum key distribution (QKD) used for secure communication.

Example: Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) in Banking

In a typical QKD implementation for banking or financial services, data is transmitted securely by encoding information in quantum states (such as photons). This process needs high bandwidth to enable real-time, continuous transmission of encrypted data between two parties (such as between a bank’s data center and a branch). Bandwidth is critical because quantum encryption keys need to be generated and transmitted rapidly to ensure the ongoing security of financial transactions.

However, the quantum information itself can be transmitted using relatively low-power hardware, especially since QKD systems primarily rely on optical fibers, which are efficient in transmitting light (photons). The actual power demand for the transmission is not particularly high, especially compared to classical data centers running complex computational tasks. Yet, the infrastructure must handle vast amounts of secure, encrypted data traffic.

    Use of Lumen’s Fiber Network:

In this context, Lumen’s Quantum Fiber network would be essential in providing the low-latency and high-bandwidth needed to ensure the security and speed of these communications. Banks or businesses using QKD require real-time transmission of encryption keys across distributed locations, and Lumen’s extensive fiber-optic infrastructure supports this type of operation, as fiber networks are ideal for transmitting quantum data efficiently over long distances.

  • MonkeyGee : On October 29, 2024, Lumen Technologies announced the appointment of Christopher Capossela to its board of directors, effective immediately. The board, following the recommendation of its nominating and corporate governance committee, voted to expand from 11 to 12 members to accommodate Capossela's appointment. Capossela, a former Microsoft executive with over 30 years at the company, including a decade as its Chief Marketing Officer, brings extensive
