The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies are investigating an E. coli outbreak linked to $McDonald's (MCD.US)$'s Quarter Pounders, sending McDonald's stock down 7% in after-hours trading. One death of an older adult in Colorado has been reported.
There also are 49 reported cases and 10 hospitalizations, according to the CDC. More than half the reported cases are in Colorado. One person has developed a condition that can cause kidney failure.
McDonald's says it is "temporarily removing" the Quarter Pounder from restaurants in the impacted areas. That includes Colorado, Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming, as well as portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. Of the 49 cases, 26 are in Colorado and nine are in Nebraska.
