Meta is a timebomb
Here's what we know:
Meta is the only entity that can report how many people use their stuff.
Meta is reliant on a large amount of users to justify companies paying them for ads.
There are NO laws that have any kind of regulation for MAU/DAU(monthly/daily active users)
Therefore, not only is it in their interest to inflate their numbers, they can do it legally.
There's already been settlements over misuse of data by Meta in courts, showing they are not above unethical practices.
Smaller social media companies have already been found or suspexted to be engaged in these practices (Triller, Twitter)
Elon Musk went to court in order to back out of his purchase due to fake user counts, but ultimately failed.
Triller was forced to purge over 250 million (out of a reported 300 million active users) fake accounts before their acquisition this year. Prior to this, they had stopped reporting user figures in 2021.
Meta announced they are changing their metrics for engagement, and have said they aren't releasing MAU/DAU stats anymore.
Instead, they will report "views" and "clicks" for advertisers. Pretty sure the world stopped using those figures in the beginning of the internet because they are easily manipulated and difficult to verify.
I WONDER WHY META MIGHT NOT BE UPFRONT ABOUT IT HMM
My guess is eventually someone will develop a AI that can accurately count users and they are attempting to mitigate the fallout.
TL;DR: Meta reports their own user numbers and engagement metrics, making billions and billions on ad revenue. Huge, insanely massive conflict of interest.
