Microsoft invests $2.2 billion to build digital infrastructure in Malaysia

Microsoft invests $2.2 billion to build digital infrastructure in Malaysia
Microsoft will invest US$2.2 billion (RM10.5 billion) to build digital infrastructure in Malaysia and use this capital to build infrastructure for its cloud computing and artificial intelligence services within 4 years.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Dato' Sri Anwar said in a Facebook post that he met with Microsoft CEO Sadia Nadella and the delegation and received the biggest investment commitment since Microsoft was founded 32 years ago in Malaysia.

Anwar said the investment covered the development of cloud systems, infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI), creating AI training opportunities for another 300,000 people, establishing a national AI center of excellence, enhancing national cybersecurity capabilities, and supporting Malaysia's system developer community.
“Malaysia welcomes this investment decision, which demonstrates their confidence in the country's strong economic foundations, clear and targeted policies, and investor-friendliness and political stability. The investment is in line with the government's focus on developing AI capabilities and will be its main supporter.

“After the courtesy visit, Nadella and I attended the National Artificial Intelligence Leadership Forum. We talk about issues involving technology, artificial intelligence and the government's plans to prepare the country for current changes.”

Microsoft CEO Sadia Nadella also promised to invest at least 7 billion US dollars (RM33.3 billion) to build the company's services from Japan to India, while viewing artificial intelligence as a growth engine, and urging countries to increase investment in this technology.
“We are committed to supporting Malaysia's artificial intelligence transformation and ensuring that it benefits all Malaysians. “Our investment in digital infrastructure and skills will help Malaysian businesses, communities and developers apply the latest technology to drive inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country.”
Microsoft is competing with companies such as Oracle, Amazon, and Alibaba Group Holdings Limited to win business in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia is a rapidly digitizing region with a population of over 650 million people.
