Microsoft to offer AMD-based AI capabilities on Azure Cloud platform
$Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.US)$ This is in a few news outlets the last several hrs. Microsoft will be offering AMD's AI alternative (to nVidia's H100-based AI capabilities) on its Azure Cloud platform. As I have mentioned before, the qualification period ie testing of new hardware on data centres is quite long. AMD launched the MI300X AI GPUs back in Dec 2023 & Microsoft is amongst its first customers (alongside Meta & Oracle). It has been over 5 mths & only now Microsoft announces the offering. Similarly, it will take many more mths to onboard other customers. Investors will need to be patient. Winning in the data centre environment takes a meticulously planned product roadmap & more importantly, executing on that roadmap. Under Lisa Su's leadership, AMD has gained a reputation of doing just these.
I think there is 1 more quality that can become important over time. AMD is working closely with customers & willing to fine-tune or make adjustments to its products in order to better add value to its customers' needs. If this proves to be successful & AMD manages to address its supply chain issues, it hopefully can reduce the need for these big customers to develop their own silicon.
