Minister: State governments unanimously agreed to raise residential water fees.
Kuala Lumpur (1st November): Minister of Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change, Nik Nazmi, stated on Wednesday that state governments have unanimously agreed to raise domestic water fees for users.
He said that his department has had multiple discussions with state governments, and all political parties agree on the need to raise domestic water fees for users, especially because some areas have not increased water fees in the past 40 years.
During the ministerial reply on the 2024 budget in the lower house of parliament on Wednesday, he explained, "Although the previous government allowed non-domestic users to raise water fees, we still need to address this issue as many states lack industrial or commercial sectors."
Nik Nazmi also stated that his department is currently developing a mechanism to eliminate the need for state water operators to seek ministerial approval for water fee adjustments.
"We will submit a proposal to the cabinet regarding the establishment of a water fee mechanism. This will allow water operators to determine water rates. However, we will also consider how to protect the interests of the bottom 40% and middle 40% income cohorts," he added.
The previous government agreed on 22nd June 2022 to adjust the non-domestic and special category water fees for the Malay Peninsula and Labuan, with an average increase of 25 sen per cubic meter.
